Similes is a lighting collection that aims to communicate glassblowing in a new way for social and cultural benefit. Based on an artisan-designer collaboration and ethnographic research, the glassblowers’ tools and actions are captured in three lamps operated by mimicking the movements used to craft them – they resemble a blowpipe with molten glass and light up when twisted or turned. These lights work as a means to illustrate glassblowing, prompt conversations about it and, ultimately, stimulate further interest in it. In the context of increasingly more glassblowing workshops closing down across Europe, Similes is a successful case study of a design intervention system for traditional artisans.
